Worship at St. Paul's

Worship is the center of our life in community as members of the Anglican Communion and the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. St. Paul's uses the 1979 Book of Common Prayer for most services, but often enlivens its celebrations of the love of God with other resources. The Sunday service at 10:00 am happens without fail, notwithstanding weather or natural disaster.

The Holy Eucharist is celebrated at most services. All are welcome at the Holy Table to receive communion. Everyone is welcome. No exceptions.

In general, Rite I is celebrated at our 8:00 am Sunday Service and Rite II at the 10:00 am service. The evening Sunday service at 5:30 pm is designed and celebrated by our Canterbury Fekllowship (students at the University of Virginia). But all are welcome and invited to enjoy dinner after the service.

We delight in great music. The St. Paul's organ (1926 Opus 597 Aeolian-Skinner ) is an instrument of great depth and color. Our organist, Albrecht von Gaudecker, brings depth of talent, experience and feeling to the service and the St. Paul's choir is among the best in the entire region. And the St. Paul's flower guild graces our church each week with the beauties of creation. We consider music and flowers to be media of worship and are proud of the extraordinary quality of each in our services.

How to Receive Communion

Come to the Holy Table (or to the chapel if you prefer to kneel) with others sitting in your pew. Hold your hands together, cupped, to receive the Bread of Life. Some prefer to dip (intinct) the bread into the wine and consume both together. Others eat the bread first, then receive the wine separately. Either is fine. (It helps to assist the minister by steadying and directing the chalice by holding it from the bottom.)
