Stewardship of Creation Committee

Update on Pollinator Sanctuary

The Stewardship of Creation Committee (formerly the Green Team) has been working behind the scenes to arrive at a suitable design and location for the Pollinator Sanctuary Garden.

As part of this effort, St. Paul’s engaged a professional landscape architect to asses all the landscape features on our grounds, with a special eye to how the garden project could fit in and enhance existing plantings.

The S.O.C. has received City approval for installing the garden in front of the church along University Avenue. In 2017, we hope to finalize the design, budget and fundraising plan, and approval by the Vestry. We welcome volunteers that can help with planning and implementing this project. The two planting plateaus as viewed from University Avenue. The pollinator sanctuary is designed to blend with the more traditional landscape across from Jefferson's university.

Two garden plots approx. 10 ft by 20 ft will be accessible from the lawn in front of the church (drawing  by Anne Russell)

Ecological modeling is used to select native plants suited to soils and site conditions (Ix Gardens in Charlottesville by Center for Urban Habitats).

Imagine a sanctuary of similar plantings providing food and shelter for moths, butterflies, and bees in all life cycle stages in all seasons.

See how the Center for Urban Habitats has transformed traditional sidewalk plantings into a variety of plantings representing our local "piedmont prairie" ecosystem at a main intersection in the Belmont neighborhood. Our pollinator sanctuary will transform the grassy monoculture to an ecologically diverse habitat.
