Heather Warren was born in Scotland and did most of her growing up in Nashville, Tennessee. She earned degrees from Cornell University, Emory University (Candler School of Theology), the University of Oxford, and The Johns Hopkins University.  She is the mother of two teenagers.  Indeed, she has more degrees than children. Heather is a hiker and backpacker, maintains a section of the Appalachian Trail in the Shenandoah National Park, sings, and plays the guitar, recorder, and viola.  She holds a full-time position as an associate professor at the University of Virginia in the Department of Religious Studies where she specializes in the history of American religious life and thought from the late-nineteenth century to the present.  Her research has also carried her into the field of American religious autobiography.  She has been associated with the UVA Clinical Pastoral Education program since the mid-1990s, leading sessions on theological reflection several times a year with chaplaincy interns and residents.  Before entering higher education, ministry took Heather to a church-related service project in the Appalachian region of east Tennessee, two churches in southern Maryland, and a part-time position in northern Virginia while in graduate school. Since coming to Charlottesville and UVA, she has been active in ministry with local churches and at the state level. You will probably notice her car around town because her license plates say “NERD OUT” and a sign on the back of her car says, “I solemnly swear I am up to no good” (a la Harry Potter).
